Happy 20 year Wedding Anniversary! Up early--still felt like sleeping in as we were not yet used to the time change. Checked out of the Flmingo no problem--off to Wal Mart again as MG's suitcase wheel bit the dust and the hotel frowned upon the sparks flying off the suitcase scraping the floor as we dragged it to our car!
Then on the the Hoover Dam--only about 30 minutes outside the Vegas, it was well worth the stop. Stopped by Lake Meade site first--girls got their national park books stamped. This lake was created when the dam was opened in 1935. Then it was on to the actual dam. The Hoover Dam is an amazing sight in it size and engineering. After a checkpoint through security, we drove the road across the dam and parked on the hill on the other side. It was hot--but only 90 degrees; cooler than the 110 degrees in Vegas yesterday, but we were all sweating like crazy. Check out these pictures:
After leaving the dam around noon, we drove over the beautiful Pat Tillman Bridge:
Tillman left a lucrative football career to defend America after 9/11 and was killed.
We were now driving through the Arizona Dessert--it was peaceful. We looked out the window and talked. It was a great ride.
We made the Grand Canyon around 4:30--there is not much to say about what an incredible place this is, and the pictures will not do it justice. We walked up from the Visitor Center to Mather Point, hiked the Rim Trail for a bit, and then came back to see the sunset at Yaki Point at 7--also a great experience. The girls were excited to be at the Rim, and kept asking for our new camera to take pictures of all the things that inspired them.
Our room at Maswik lodge was very lodgy--very rustic, but very adequate after a good long day. We enjoyed some home cooked food at the cafeteria, and now it is time to enjoy a few local Grand Canyon and Flagstaff craft brews for our anniversary. Cheers!
