Day 3: Out of the Canyon and on to the way to L.A.
What a night! We set our alarms to get up at 1:30 to see the Persied Meteor Shower--we dragged ourselves out and saw almost 10 shooting starts out in the very dark sky--we could see nearly every constellation there is and the Milky Way--it was beautiful, even through half open eyes!
Then back to be and up again at 4:30 to drive over to Mather Point to see the Sunrise....we got out and over there by 5:30 for the 5:45 sunrise....there were many people there anticipating this same event. Some cheered when the sun came up--you can see where here:
We thought we would go back to bed, but we were all pretty awake, so we went back to the room for some "gourmet" microwave oatmeal! Then we were brave and hiked a bit of the Bright Angel Trail. We were cautious because the rangers warned that it takes twice as long to come up as it does to go down!
We arranged to have a Mass for our 20th anniversary--it was at the small Catholic chapel in the Grand Canyon Village--we met Father Bala there and he conducted a beautiful mass where the girls did the readings and we were the only four people there! What an experience.
Real nice Best Western in Barstow, CA--Mo took over the TV when she found out gymnastics was on and we watched the women do their thing.
Nice hot breakfast this morning and off the the Santa Monica Pier! But first, another trip to Walmart as Anna's suitcase has almost disintegrated...bad wheel and now the retractable handle has almost completely pulled itself out of the actual suitcase...we brought duct tape, but not this much!
Gorgeous but HOT drive!
